Munro Court Development, Castlemaine

Munro Court open to public 10th/11th September 2016 click here

This ecologically sustainable housing development in central Victoria has been designed with non-defined boundaries between individual dwellings by Lifehouse Design. The design brief was to integrate the landscape and dwellings using local plants. There is no ego in the buildings and they do not compete with eachother in the way of a convention streetscape, this allowed us to approach this project as one garden with eight buildings integrated into the space. There are some private areas screened with plantings and partitions, but these have been structured around connecting 'rooms' of themed plantings throughout the landscape. The omission of defined boundaries adds to the community ethos. The use of local plants create a firm sense of place and they have thrived even when conditions have been testing. This development has succeeded because there has been little compromise in both philosophy and design.
